The City of Kingston Public Safety and Government Committee voted Tuesday to approve naming a short portion of Greenkill Avenue in memory of Joe Fay, the longtime executive director of the local Boys & Girls Club.

A requester representing the Fay family said the mayor supported the idea after the family submitted a petition of roughly 350 signatures and spoke with nearby neighbors and the Boys & Girls Club leadership; the proposed commemorative name would span Greenkill Avenue between Clinton Avenue and Iwo Jima Lane, adjacent to the club.

The requester described Joe Fay as the Boys & Girls Club executive director for 45 years and said club leaders would help contact former members who might provide remarks at a small dedication ceremony. Committee members asked process questions about sign fabrication and timing; staff said the mayor signs the legislation after the council action and the Department of Public Works handles fabrication and installation of street signs.

A motion to approve the naming was made, seconded and carried by voice vote. Committee members discussed timing for a dedication ceremony, suggesting a late‑summer date so the club’s mentors and children could be present; the family and staff will coordinate the exact date and fabrication schedule.
