Jackson County legislators introduced Ordinance 5986, which would adopt the annual budget and set appropriations for the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2025, during a meeting Wednesday, May 28, at 10 a.m. at the Jackson County Courthouse. The ordinance was introduced by Legislator Charlie Franklin and assigned to the legislature as a whole for consideration.

The ordinance builds on recent budget work: earlier in the meeting a separate measure (Ordinance 5985) that would amend the 2025 amended budget adopted Dec. 31, 2024, was read into the record and then held for further consideration. Legislators agreed to hold that item rather than act on it at the meeting.

The chair outlined a schedule for consideration of the proposed budget: the Thursday meeting was canceled; the legislature will meet Friday to consider an amendment and will hold a budget hearing the following week. The chair said the final proposed budget will be taken up on Monday, June 9. A printed budget book was available at the meeting and will be distributed; staff also will send an electronic copy if needed.

Other routine business at the short session included approval of the journal and an adjournment vote. County Executive's Office staff reported no formal reports at the meeting.

Next steps are administrative: Ordinance 5986 is in committee as a whole and will return to the legislature for further consideration after the scheduled amendment session, the budget hearing, and the June 9 final proposal review.
