Select Board approves VFW turkey‑shoot dates after safety assurances
Summary
The Select Board approved dates for the VFW’s turkey‑shoot events after organizers described safety measures, volunteer oversight and a 0‑accident record.
Representatives of the local VFW asked the Select Board on June 30 to approve dates for the organization’s summer and holiday turkey‑shoot fundraising events. The board voted to approve the requested dates.
The VFW representative described event dates from Aug. 24 through Nov. 23 for the turkey shoots, a Christmas shoot on Dec. 14 and additional March and April shoots for St. Patrick’s Day and Easter. He said one early date (Aug. 24) would be a private shoot for two businesses and that regular public shoots would follow. The VFW representative said the post has a “0 mishap record,” uses bright safety clothing, volunteers, and supplies shotguns and ammunition to standardize equipment and reduce safety risk.
Board members asked about noise for downstream residents and mitigation; the VFW said it hangs a tarp and rope to reduce noise toward the river and that complaints from previous residents had diminished. The board motioned to approve the dates and explicitly joked “no live turkeys are harmed” during the vote; the motion passed by voice vote.
The board directed the VFW to continue notifying the police department about events and to maintain the safety measures described.
