Brook and Stough court resurfacing underway; Brook will gain additional pickleball courts

The Parks and Recreation Commission of Hinsdale on July 8 received an update that resurfacing projects at Brook and Stough parks are underway and that Brook Park will include additional pickleball courts when it reopens.

Parks staff said the resurfacing contracts were awarded through standard bidding processes to a contractor (J and R Asphalt) and that both parks have completed mill-down work and some fence repairs. Staff said the projects depend on suitable weather for color coating and asphalt curing and that they expect both parks to reopen in late July.

The report matters because the courts host high-use activities including tennis and pickleball; resurfacing addresses player safety issues such as hollow spots in the playing surface and deteriorated fencing. Staff said the Brook Park retrofit will eliminate hollow pockets that previously caused unpredictable ball bounces and will slightly reconfigure fence openings to reduce balls moving between adjacent courts. The Brook plan also reallocates court space to add two additional pickleball courts while retaining tennis courts and basketball facilities; Stough Park will remain tennis-only after residents requested no pickleball there.

Commissioners asked whether residents had objected to the timing or the loss of court access during peak season; staff said outreach and on-site conversations with local users, including pickleball players, produced few complaints and that users understood the temporary closures. Staff also said the vendor for court lining and net installation is US Tennis, subcontracted by the awardee, and that the contractor previously performed work on the Burns project.

Staff noted the work includes in-house public-works tasks such as bleacher pads installed at Burns to address ongoing maintenance issues.

Next steps: staff will continue monitoring curing conditions and expects to open courts in late July; they will also provide updates if schedules change and will report final completion and any warranty or punch-list items to the commission.
