The Westerly School Committee on June 18 approved a field-trip request for the Westerly High School softball team to travel to Florida to participate in a tournament and visit theme parks.

Coach Chris Luppi described the typical itinerary as a Saturday-to-Wednesday trip that includes two games per day and optional visits to Universal or Walt Disney theme parks. Luppi said the trip is fully funded through fundraising and parent support; he added that the school does not bear the cost and that the program assists families having difficulty raising funds.

Under district policy, multi-night or distant trips require committee approval. The committee approved the request by voice vote and offered congratulations to Coach Luppi on his retirement, which members noted the team will celebrate.
