Commission opens hearing, advances resolution to vacate portion of Bailey Avenue in Red

The Crawford County Commission opened a public hearing during its meeting to consider vacating a portion of Bailey Avenue in the town of Red, Crawford County.

County staff told commissioners the road segment appears on two different plats filed at different times: an earlier plat showed a 30-foot right-of-way, while a later plat for a subdivision showed a 40-foot right-of-way. Under the staff interpretation, the owner on the east side would receive a 30-foot portion and the owner on the west side would receive the remaining 10 feet.

The county staff described the situation as a technical, plat-based discrepancy and said the recommendation was to proceed with a resolution that would vacate the recorded public right-of-way and certify the split consistent with the original plats. No member of the public spoke for or against the proposal during the hearing.

After closing the hearing, commissioners moved to consider proposed Resolution 2025-021, described by staff as the instrument to vacate the recorded portion of Bailey Avenue and document the resulting property lines. A commissioner seconded the motion and commissioners signaled assent on the record; the meeting transcript does not include a separate recorded roll-call tally of the final vote.

Because the staff described the recommendation as an interpretation of the county’s plat records, they noted the action remained subject to normal legal review and could be challenged in court by interested parties.

The commission’s next steps are to place Resolution 2025-021 on the record and proceed with the ministerial steps to implement the vacate if the resolution is adopted according to the county’s normal procedures.
