The Springfield Historic Commission approved exterior masonry repairs and the removal (to roof level) of a deteriorated and nonfunctional brick chimney at the PVTA maintenance facility, 2840 Main Street, after staff and the applicant described significant mortar and spalling deterioration.

Applicant representatives described water infiltration and spalling across the brick façade, granite sill replacement needs and failing chimney pointing; they said the top of the chimney was losing mortar and posed a life-safety hazard. The project scope calls for repointing and selective replacement of brick where necessary, granite sill replacement, and removal of the top section of the chimney down to roof level with a weatherproof cap to prevent falling bricks.

Commissioners discussed visibility and historic context. Staff noted the building is not in a locally regulated historic district for this review and that the proposed work addressed safety and fabric preservation; the commission found no adverse effect on the building’s character and approved the project. The commission instructed coordination with the building department for permits and that the project documents and photographs be filed with staff.
