Good afternoon. SDI Engineering and district staff told the Edinburg CISD Facilities Committee on July 24 that reconstruction and remediation work at Canterbury Elementary is substantially complete ahead of the contractor’s July 30 deadline and that staff are reconciling final costs.
The update matters because the work affects 16 classrooms, the library and shared spaces ahead of staff and teacher return; committee members pressed for a full accounting of change orders and outside costs before final payments are issued.
Dalia (Dala) Guzman of SDI Engineering presented photos and a timeline and said the contractor portion of the reconstruction was completed June 12 and that interior finishes were finished in July. She said flooring was completed July 10, HVAC duct cleaning July 14, drywall repairs July 11, millwork July 21 and that the contractor SLR has “completed all the work at Canterbury Elementary.” Guzman told the committee that the project began with an original budget of $600,000 but that some areas not originally addressed required additional work.
Guzman itemized change orders reported in the meeting: a classroom-and-hall painting change order of about $88,000, floor repairs of $11,647.20, and a library “wrap” allowance shown as $24,935 that SDI said is separate from SLR’s scope. Guzman also said the team added weatherstripping to protect the building after a rain event. She reported, “we have at a minimum a savings of $50,000 for this portion of the work,” but said final reconciliation with the contractor is still in process.
Superintendent Dr. Mario Sainz (as identified in the meeting) and board members praised the quality and timeliness of the work. Guzman and other staff described operational steps still under way: the restoration company packed classroom materials by room number, custodians and maintenance are assisting with unboxing and returning furniture, and some areas (music room, gym, computer lab and a hallway) have not yet been waxed because furniture is being moved back in.
On the library wrap, Guzman said a contractor offered a $25,000 discount on tile to be applied to the library ramp and that she planned to approve that purchase the following morning; she described that $25,000 as separate from the reconciled savings figure. The committee requested a full, itemized accounting of exterior work and all change orders to be provided to the board once SDI and the contractors finish reconciling invoices.
Committee members and staff agreed to allow teachers limited early access to set up classrooms, and the superintendent approved paying teacher aides a daily rate to help unpack if needed. No formal board action or funding vote occurred at the facilities committee meeting; staff said final payouts are pending reconciliation and documentation.
District staff said they will bring a full cost breakdown and the exterior-work numbers to the board so trustees can review the final totals before final payment.
The committee moved on to the next agenda item after the update.
