Neenah — During public forum at the July 16 council meeting, resident Scott Becker urged the city to adopt a program of unique names and signage for local trails, including QR-code maps and sponsorships to promote tourism and neighborhood connectivity.
Becker, who gave his address as 1061 Greenacres Lane, said Courtside Field — a new development in the Shattuck neighborhood — will include a trail and suggested the city consider naming trails after local families or historical figures and installing interpretive or wayfinding signage. He noted a lack of signage on existing paths and specifically cited the Walnut Street Trail, which runs by City Hall and connects the downtown hotel to nearby retail, saying there is no clear wayfinding.
"There are many trails in Neenah," Becker said. "I would encourage the city to look at naming each one of the trails ... and then also, look at basically setting up some signage." He suggested the city explore sponsorships and QR-code maps so visitors and residents could learn about routes and nearby businesses.
Council response and next steps
No council action followed public forum. The public comment was recorded and closed; no council member requested follow-up at the July 16 meeting. Becker's remarks will be part of the public record and could inform future parks or downtown wayfinding discussions.
Ending
Becker encouraged the council to consider trails as a tourism and neighborhood amenity and to pursue low-cost signage and mapping strategies for trails citywide.
