Jurors rejected the lone bid for canine and feline food because it was filled out improperly and authorized re-advertisement. Animal-services staff told jurors the shelter feeds about 150 dogs and about 100 cats a day and described improvements and adoption efforts.
The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury voted Thursday to reject the lone bid for canine and feline food after staff said the submission was filled out improperly and must be resubmitted.
"They filled the bid out improperly, and so they have to resubmit it and do it over again so it's properly done," a staff speaker said during the meeting. Miss Eason moved to reject the bid; Mister Hayes seconded the motion and the item carried.
Jurors asked operational questions about the shelter. "Probably usually roughly about, 150 dogs a day and roughly about a 100 cats," Nathan, an animal-services staff member, said when asked how many animals are fed. Nathan added a rough total estimate of "250" animals, noting the number fluctuates day to day.
Jurors and staff also discussed adoption and transport efforts. Juror Landry said euthanasia rates had declined and credited shelter staff with increased adoptions and use of out-of-parish transports. Staff noted a new facility is planned and that the facility should improve operations.
Because the bid was rejected for improper submission, staff indicated the item will be re-advertised under the standard bidding authority previously granted by the jury.
