The Elko County Commission voted to approve Proclamation 2025-11, declaring September 2025 as Suicide Prevention Month in Elko County. Commissioner Domo read the proclamation and moved its approval; the motion carried on a voice vote.
Lynette Vega, president and founder of 0 Suicides Elko County, thanked the commission and described planned community events and trainings. Vega invited the public to a September 13 awareness walk at Great Basin College, with registration at 8 a.m. and a ceremony at about 8:45 a.m., and said the group will have behavioral-health tables and food trucks at the event.
Vega also described free SafeTALK training scheduled for Sept. 24 at the Nevada Health Center with two sessions: 8:30–11:30 a.m. and 12:30–3:30 p.m. She emphasized that SafeTALK teaches participants how to talk with someone thinking about suicide.
The proclamation text, read into the record by Commissioner Domo, highlighted the national 988 crisis number and World Suicide Prevention Day on Sept. 10. The group also promoted a Sept. 10 restaurant fundraiser at Wendy’s on Mountain City Highway, where 15% of profits during the event will support 0 Suicides Elko County.
Commission members praised the group’s outreach and urged residents to memorize 988. Speakers noted that 988 connects callers and texters to trained crisis counselors any time of day and that early intervention and community training can reduce suicidal crises.
Public comment at the meeting included several personal testimonials from volunteers and representatives of local organizations; the commission closed public comment and moved to a photo opportunity following the proclamation vote.
