Jocelyn Ribeiro, an urban farmer from Port St. Lucie, brought live quails and multiple preparations of quail eggs to the West Palm Beach Green Market, where shoppers handled the birds and sampled eggs.
Ribeiro said she raises the quail "from the egg" and manages their "whole life cycle," adding that "everything that's on the table comes from them." She told shoppers she and her family raise the birds at home and sell products including raw, hard‑boiled and pickled, seasoned eggs. A reporter noted that with "the price of chicken eggs so high these days, it seems more people are willing to widen their horizons and taste them."
Shoppers stopped to touch the birds. One shopper who petted a quail said, "They're soft." Ribeiro said the birds and the ability to present multiple products draw attention at the market: "We only farm these quails, so we get the ability to be a little bit creative with it, which I think is what draws them the attention." She also offered samples so shoppers could try quail eggs.
The vendor noted the quails and her booth are part of the West Palm Beach Green Market; the market's information page is listed at wpb.org/greenmarket. Ribeiro said she sells her products directly at the market and described quail farming as both a business and a passion.
For shoppers interested in Ribeiro's booth and other vendors, the West Palm Beach Green Market posts details on its website; Ribeiro said she appears at the market on Saturdays.
