The Fair Political Practices Commission on March 20 adopted proposed Regulation 18 720 to extend the annual Form 700 filing deadline for officials affected by recent Southern California wildfires. The regulation aligns the annual filing deadline with a governor issued 60-day extension for assuming- and leaving-office filings, setting the new deadline to June 2, 2025, for impacted officials.
Simon Russell, commission counsel, presented the draft regulation and said staff prepared it at the commission's request in January. He noted the commission previously adopted a similar extension during the COVID-19 emergency and that the annual filing deadline is set by regulation rather than statute for most officials. Russell told the commission the draft would "set the deadline to June 2, which is a Monday."
Commissioners praised legal division staff and the coordination with the governor's office. Commissioner Branch called the staff work "excellent," emphasizing the scope of the recent fires and the need for a prompt administrative response. There was no public opposition during the meeting.
Chair Silver moved adoption of the proposed regulation; Commissioner Branch seconded. The commission approved the regulation by roll-call vote. Commissioner Brandt, Commissioner Ortiz, Commissioner Wilson and Chair Silver voted yes. The regulation will be implemented pursuant to the administrative rulemaking timeline.
