The Unified School District of Antigo Board of Education voted to convert April 21, 2025, from a scheduled nonattendance day to an instructional day, saying the district has exceeded its allotted snow days. The motion passed 8–1 on a voice/roll-call vote during the board’s public meeting.
Board members debated at length before the final vote. Jill Maddock Nelson moved the main motion to convert April 21 to an instructional day, saying the district committee recommended using that date to make up time lost to weather and illness. ‘‘It was recommended by committee to bring it to the full board,’’ Maddock Nelson said when making the motion.
The board considered, then rejected, a substitute motion that would have moved make-up days to the end of the school calendar year. That substitute motion failed by the recorded count reported in the meeting: eight votes against and one in favor. After the substitute motion failed, the board returned to the main motion and approved converting April 21 to an instructional day, with eight in favor and one opposed.
Members said the decision was prompted by the district having already used more snow days than budgeted. Several trustees expressed concern about making April 21 an instructional day because it falls the day after Easter and some families and staff may have already planned travel. Board member Angie Schreiber said she worried families and staff would have planned a longer holiday weekend and therefore attendance could be low. ‘‘My only concern with moving this to an instructional day is it’s the day after Easter,’’ Schreiber said during debate.
District administration told the board that adding the make-up day at the end of the year would require staff and scheduling adjustments and could push the school year later into summer. Superintendent Mrs. Ojinski explained the district’s earlier practice and staffing considerations, saying the district had discussed virtual instruction as an option but had not implemented virtual snow days districtwide.
Board member Dr. Dave Barto noted that the school board does not decide whether a day is a snow day but does set make-up days. ‘‘Snow days are the most difficult decision that a district administrator has to make. And let me just make this known publicly. The school board has no say in snow days. But we do with makeup days,’’ Barto said.
The board chair confirmed the motion could be revisited later if additional snow days occur. After the vote, trustees discussed operational concerns — staffing, attendance, and bus scheduling — and administration said it would work with school staff to limit hardship for employees who made travel plans based on the original calendar.
The motion: convert April 21, 2025, from a nonattendance day to an instructional day. Outcome: approved, 8–1. The meeting record shows the substitute motion to move excess snow days to the end of the school year failed (8 against, 1 in favor).
