Aliyah, the student representative for Ossining High School, told the board that March has been “another outstanding month at OHS,” highlighting cultural events, student awards and academic achievements.
The report summarized a series of March activities at OHS, including a Women’s History Month celebration organized by Miss Aguilar, Mr. Garon and the Human Rights Club; a STEM networking event organized by students Taisha Carver and Sanaya Bell at Ossining Riverworks; recognition of school social workers during Social Work Week; and college tours for AVID and New York GEAR UP students. Aliyah said the Women’s History Month keynote speaker at the March 27 program will be school social worker Miss Jimenez.
The student representative listed individual student recognitions and competition results. She said Jonathan Abzoun, Denise San Martin, Aki Williams and Reese Caparelli received the “bridal award” for leadership and community contributions; students earned multiple placements in the Regeneron Westchester Science and Engineering Fair, the New York State Science and Engineering Fair and the SUNY Albany inaugural research symposium; and the OHS DECA team earned medals at the New York DECA state conference. Aliyah congratulated Reese Caparelli for winning the Regeneron Westchester fair for research on the impacts of road noise on bird communication and noted other prize winners by name.
Aliyah also reported extracurricular highlights: Unified Bowling launch, the mock trial team reaching semifinals, the AP art showcase, band performances in Tarrytown and New York City Saint Patrick’s Day parades, and the robotics team qualifying for the FIRST Robotics World Championship in Houston.
Board members praised the report and suggested using photos or a voiceover for social media distribution. The student representative concluded with thanks to teachers and advisers named throughout the report.
The report was delivered during the board’s public meeting and placed on the record as the student representative’s March update.
