At its April work session, the Lakeland School System Board of Education recognized students and staff for state-level accomplishments in robotics, swimming, theater, cross country and audio-visual production.
The Lakeland School System Board of Education recognized multiple students and staff for state-level achievements at its work session, honoring robotics competitors, an All-State theater student, a state swim competitor, a cross-country qualifier and an audio-visual contest-winning team.
The recognitions began with members of the Lakeland Prep VEX IQ robotics team receiving certificates and state-recognition pins for coaches and sponsors. Board Chair Laura Harrison called the group forward and presented certificates and pins to students and staff, noting many of the honors were “firsts” for the district.
Superintendent Dr. Paul Horrell and the board also recognized Liam Sheridan for competing at the Tennessee Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association state championship and Lillian Bogue for being named to the 2025 All-State Theater roster. The board acknowledged theater directors Lisonbee Garland and Jeff White for their roles, and noted a Lakeland Preparatory runner who qualified for the 2025 TSSAA state cross-country championship; his coach, Matthew Grady, accepted recognition in the student’s absence.
Board members singled out an audio-visual team led by teacher Mr. Luno, which won first place in a state AV contest after producing a video on a tight timeline. A board member described the contest as a 24-hour prompt-to-delivery challenge and noted Lakeland’s team turned in their entry quickly, placing first.
The board took photographs with the honored students and staff and said formal recognitions of tenure recipients and other items would be handled during the business meeting next week.
The recognitions occupied a sizable portion of the session but did not generate formal votes; the board adjourned by voice vote after routine closing motions.
