At its April 7 meeting the Town of Northborough Board of Health recapped recent public-health outreach, announced staff and training plans, and noted a board vacancy after a member’s resignation.
Public-health staff reported the board’s first wellness fair during National Public Health Week, with roughly 50 residents attending and more than 20 local and state organizations participating. The event included demonstrations, Narcan training and a bloodmobile visit; staff said about 50 volunteers assisted with the blood drive.
Public-health staff said social-worker office hours will be held weekly at the library from 3 to 5 p.m., starting in April, and that a UMass Amherst master of public health intern placed through the Department of Public Health will join in June to work on digital wellness and mental health through August. Staff also said they will attend a Massachusetts Association of Health Boards certification program on May 10 covering legal authority, opioid abatement funds and nuisance/environmental case studies; grant funds will be used to cover attendance costs.
Board members were told the library and health staff will participate in mental-health first-aid training and other professional development. Staff noted ongoing community outreach by the public-health office and plans for programming in May for Mental Health Awareness Month.
During the meeting the board was informed that member Teresa has resigned. Staff explained that board vacancies are filled by appointment from the Select Board and that the Select Board will receive applications and conduct interviews; the chair will participate in that interview process before appointment. Staff also reminded the board that existing members were initially appointed by the Select Board.
Other updates included brief notices about local food businesses (Blue Square Pizza opening in June; Britney's Café closure) and a note that a motel project on Route 9 is preparing septic work and awaiting adjacent demolition before connection or demolition work proceeds. Staff said the motel applicant had discussed small wastewater-treatment options in prior meetings but did not provide new details at this session.
The board set its next meeting for May 13 and accepted the updates. No formal action on programs or budgets was recorded in the transcript.
