Councilmembers discussed the Police and Fire Sculpture Fund during a budget workshop and asked staff to obtain updated cost estimates so the council can decide whether to complete a long-delayed memorial project.
Staff said the fund currently holds about $37,000. Council discussion referenced earlier fundraising and design work, and one participant said the project was estimated at roughly $150,000 a decade ago. A council member described the memorial as a legacy for former Chief Halstead and suggested bringing 2'3 quotes to understand current costs. The same council member said, "I think what the... the mayor's proposing is let's just do it. Let's just take a hundred thousand out of the general fund, add it to the 37,000, and get this thing done and over with," noting the city could also consider allocations from police or fire funds.
Council members emphasized the need to verify current quotes and documentation from earlier work, and to work with a small group to gather reliable estimates. Staff said they would look for prior engineering and fundraising records and return with cost estimates and options for funding the project. No formal appropriation was made during the workshop; the council asked staff to report back with numbers and possible funding sources.
