Anchorage — The Anchorage School District governance committee reviewed proposed language adding opioid overdose protection to BP/AR 50.131.6 (Alcohol and Other Drugs) on May 8, and district staff reported Narcan kits have been acquired and placed alongside automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in schools.
Kathy, a district staff member, presented the update and said administrators added an opioid‑overdose protection section recommended by the Alaska School Boards Association. Committee members asked who would be trained to use the kits and how they would be made available.
Peggy Rankin, senior director of talent, described the practical steps taken: the district obtained red boxes containing two Narcan kits and placed them near AEDs in most school buildings; she said she asked nurses to place Narcan next to AEDs and to train security staff. Rankin said nasal spray instructions are straightforward and the kits are widely available through pharmacies.
On training, Rankin said schools train security staff and that nurses can assist with training. “I was able to get red boxes, which are next and they have 2 Narcan kits in them, and they're placed next to I've asked nurse to have them placed next to all the AEDs in the building,” Rankin told the committee.
Committee members raised no further objections and the chair asked whether anyone objected to moving the policy change forward as a recommended agenda item for a future board business meeting; with no objections, the committee agreed to forward the item.
The committee’s action was procedural: it forwarded the recommended policy language for consideration at a board business meeting and requested administration support and clarity on training and placement protocols.
