A City of Richmond representative used the March 28 Central Virginia Transportation Authority meeting to thank the authority and its staff for regional support and to announce new local funding tied to a downtown transit hub.
"The city council passed unanimously to add $2,000,000 in new USDOT Build America grant funds," said Dr. Newbill, the City of Richmond representative, noting the additional funds add to technical assistance and will support advancing a downtown transit hub project. Dr. Newbill said the city asked staff member Moore Clark to help with the downtown transit hub project and noted the region had received a $6,500,000 award from the authority to the transit hub.
Separately, an authority member reported that CBTA allocations for a highway extension and interchange work in New Kent have supported regional economic development: a Target distribution center is planned at that exit and is expected to add roughly 500 employees; combined with another employer in the area, the member said about 800 new jobs will result from recent development near the improved interchange. The member also reported that a large travel‑center (Bucky's) will break ground this summer and is expected to open in 2027.
Those remarks were delivered as part of member comments and were not the subject of formal authority action at the meeting. No additional project approvals or funding decisions were made during the March 28 session.
