Kearney ' The Board of Aldermen directed staff to submit the south side of the museum property, facing downtown, as Kearney's location for a Clay County-sponsored selfie station. The board approved the motion by voice vote, 3-1, after staff summarized location options and county timeline requirements.
"The project goals are to boost community pride and engagement, to drive tourism and foot traffic to local landmarks, and to generate authentic, high quality content for promotional use," Carolyn Yaczek, Kearney economic development director, said while presenting the county's proposal.
Nut graf: Clay County is placing 14 selfie stations across the county; participating cities must name a location and submit a photo and short description within roughly one to two weeks. Kearney staff presented multiple downtown and park options and the board chose a museum-facing site with a larger street-pole banner as part of the recommended placemaking.
Yaczek said the county's initial rollout will include 14 total sites and that Kearney must submit a finalized location within one to two weeks; installation by the Kearney Parks Department was proposed for September 2025. Staff presented several options: the Washington Street Walkway (mural area), the southeast corner of Jefferson and Washington (near the museum and fountain), Lions Park splash pad, and the Jesse James Trail bridge. She noted some locations would require direct-bury installation and others could use a surface mount to minimize brick disturbance.
Board members and staff discussed aesthetic and safety trade-offs. Several speakers favored the museum/fountain area for visibility and access; others supported the Washington Street Walkway to leverage mural art and grant opportunities (Kansas City Arts Commission, Missouri Arts Council) to enhance placemaking. Staff reported one proposed corner sits in MoDOT right-of-way, which staff said would prevent placing the station there unless moved off the right-of-way. Concerns were also raised that a splash-pad location would appear inactive outside the three-month busy season.
After discussion, a board member moved to place Kearney's selfie station on the south side of the museum property facing downtown and to incorporate a larger banner on a street pole; another board member seconded the motion. A voice vote passed the motion 3 yes, 1 no. The motion included no immediate funding commitment beyond staff time to submit materials to Clay County and to coordinate installation with Parks. Staff noted they will provide a specific photo and location description to the county within the county's submission window.
Ending: Staff will submit the museum-side location and follow the county's mapping and installation process; the city will address MoDOT banner and right-of-way limitations as needed and pursue mural or placemaking enhancements through grants or local coordination where appropriate.
