Kearney ' A Kearney resident told the Board of Aldermen she wants the city to study restrictions on street parking in the Cedar Worth subdivision to improve emergency-vehicle access and winter snow removal.
"I'm asking your input and asking your help to see if we can move something that would be beneficial for all your citizens," June Hewitt, a 20-year Kearney resident who said she lives at 816 West Eighth Avenue, told the board during the public-comment period.
Nut graf: Hewitt said she had a medical emergency last winter and is concerned that vehicles parked on both sides of neighborhood streets could impede fire trucks and ambulances. She said she had discussed the issue with Assistant Chief Jeff Fort at the fire station, Officer McIntyre at the police department, and a city codes official identified only as Kathy, and that her homeowners association had sent a parking-guideline letter; she asked the board for help pursuing a city-level remedy.
Hewitt described outreach she had done: she said the HOA issued a two-week notice about covenant parking restrictions that led some compliance but not full compliance, and that she had requested city staff and public-safety personnel to inspect the streets. She said the issue also affects snow-plowing operations and that removing cars from streets in winter would improve plowing and emergency response.
No alderman or staff made a motion or committed to a specific study or ordinance change during the meeting; the board acknowledged the comment and thanked Hewitt for raising the concern. Staff present were asked to note the issue for follow-up; Hewitt said she had already contacted the fire and police departments and the HOA.
Ending: The board did not take formal action during the meeting. The resident requested city attention to street-parking restrictions for safety and snow removal; staff and public-safety contacts were noted and follow-up was implied but not scheduled.
