The Shelby County Board approved an amended intergovernmental agreement (IGA) that secures a juvenile-detention placement with Kane County and approved the annual firearms authorizations required by county policy.

County staff proposed amending a three-year IGA to a two-year agreement with Kane County and accepting a daily rate increase from $1.75 to $2.25 per day for juvenile detention placement. Staff said the two-year term, combined with a contractual 30-day written-notice clause, preserves flexibility to terminate if needed. The board moved, amended and approved the IGA change.

The board also completed its annual firearms approval process, which county policy requires to have documented signatures from the chief judge, the circuit judge and the county board chairman. The probation department reported it is up to date on training and anticipated recertification.

A board member noted challenges in locating closer detention capacity within the region, and staff said several counties were not offering IGAs or were at capacity. The county reported last year’s actual detention costs were limited; the IGA change was presented to the partnering county board and approved by Shelby County after an amendment.

The board recorded the vote on the combined IGA and firearms item; the vote passed with one recorded no vote (Julie Edwards). County staff said the amendment is intended to guarantee placement for juveniles when local detention is needed and to align contractual terms with current regional availability and rates.
