Superintendent Eddie Keel reported the Summer Learning Camp launch, course-recovery offerings, textbook purchases for science classes, academic pentathlon results and rehiring letter timelines tied to pending budget approval.
Temporary Interim Superintendent Eddie Keel told the board May 29 that the district's Summer Learning Camp began May 28 for students in grades 1-9 at Buckley Carpenter and West Junior High Schools, operating 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Keel also described the Beyond the Bell program available to high-school students for course recovery or enrichment and directed interested students to contact Zolanda Massey or Annette Pugh to enroll.
Keel said science textbooks have been purchased for East, West and Fayette-Ware high schools and that remaining textbook orders will be placed on or after July 1. He also reported Academic Pentathlon results from San Antonio: the 7th-grade team placed fourth nationally and the 8th-grade team placed fifth; a sixth grader placed second in a field that included eighth graders.
Keel said rehire letters will be emailed to all Fayette County employees pending budget approval; certified employees were expected to receive their letters by June 15 with start dates and other details. At the time of the meeting, the superintendent said no job cuts were anticipated.
Board members heard an update on the Buckley car-rider line: Keel and Mr. Hill observed operations after multiple complaints; one stop sign has been installed and a second will be added to improve traffic flow. The board did not take formal action on these operational items during the meeting.
