Alief ISD bond projects mostly on schedule; roofing and site work delayed by wet summer
Alief ISD’s construction and bond program remains active across multiple campuses, district staff told the Board of Trustees on Aug. 26, with most projects either complete or proceeding on a revised schedule.

Vincent Lewis, assistant superintendent for support services, and Clem Medina, senior project manager with the district’s program manager LAN, briefed trustees on the bimonthly bond-status update. Medina said projects completed over the summer include a turf replacement at Hastings and several parking- and concrete-repair projects. Other projects in construction or procurement include roof-replacement packages, an agricultural science center (plans submitted to Harris County) and stadium work at Crump (plans submitted for city permitting). Several projects are entering board procurement steps in September.

Medina said two types of work slipped because June was “a really wet month”: certain outdoor site-improvement tasks (small bus-drive/site patches at Hollow Middle and ASF) and sections of the district-wide roofing program. The roofing contractors are now doing off-hours work and some crews start as early as 3 a.m. to avoid impacting campus activities. Medina told the board affected site work should be completed in early September and roofing tasks are expected to be substantially complete by October, though additional scope could extend schedules slightly.

Trustees asked whether the delays would increase project costs. Medina and Lewis responded there is no current budget impact from the schedule slips. Lewis noted the eight classroom additions targeted for HVAC replacement are rooftop units installed around 2006–2008 as part of a previous bond program and are being replaced now as part of the long-range plan.

The board had no further questions after the update and moved on to other agenda items.
