Board approves replacement of Linehan Intermediate serving lines after cold unit failure
Summary
The district approved buying two matching serving lines for Linehan Intermediate School after a cold unit became irreparable; the board chose the lowest bid and confirmed existing service provider will continue maintenance.
The Marshalltown Community School District board voted 7-0 to replace both the hot and cold serving lines at Linehan Intermediate School after a district service provider recommended replacing a cold unit that was beyond repair.
Lynn, a district staff member who presented the item, told the board the cold unit on one of the lines could not be repaired and recommended replacing both lines so they would match in age and appearance. She said the district solicited competitive quotes and the Vollrath option offered through Central returned the lowest responsive price and met the district specifications.
"The cold unit on one of our lines is beyond repair," Lynn said. "We're looking at replacing both lines so that they're same age and aesthetic." She also told the board the district's current service provider would continue to service the lines regardless of the vendor chosen.
Board members asked for clarification of what a serving line is; Lynn described it as a buffet-style counter with hot and cold wells and a sneeze guard used during the regular school day for students to pick food.
The formal motion presented asked the board to approve the proposed replacement of the serving lines at Linehan Intermediate School as presented. The motion passed on a 7-0 voice vote.
Staff noted the replacement would standardize equipment across district kitchens and allow the district to keep current service arrangements in place for ongoing maintenance.
