The Lockhart City Council approved agreements extending warranties and support for the police department’s Motorola body‑worn and in‑car camera systems and authorized the city manager to execute the contracts. The motion passed unanimously.
Police Captain Danny Williams told the council the department purchased 29 Motorola body‑worn cameras in 2022 for $85,260, funded primarily with a governor’s grant (about 75% of the cost) and a 25% city match. In 2023 the department added 25 in‑car video systems at a total cost of $247,500, financed over five years.
Motorola presented proposals to extend warranty and service coverage for three additional years beyond the existing five‑year period, the captain said, locking current pricing for continued maintenance, software updates and cloud storage. Williams summarized the staff recommendation to accept Motorola’s proposals. The body‑worn‑camera warranty extension was described as approximately $72,036 total (about $24,012 per year beginning in 2028). The in‑car‑system extension was presented as $105,969 over three years, with coverage beginning in mid‑2028; staff said the warranties would preserve operational readiness through early 2031.
Councilman Gabe Michaelson moved to approve the agreements; Councilman Westmoreland seconded. The motion passed on a unanimous voice/hand vote.
City staff said the extensions are intended to hold current pricing for services rather than to purchase new equipment; the council did not approve new camera purchases at this meeting. Several council members asked whether the city might later consider alternative vendors; Williams said other vendors exist but that switching platforms would require a substantial future procurement and integration process.
The council directed staff to incorporate the future warranty payments into the Police Department operating budget beginning in fiscal year 2028.
