The Del Valle ISD Board of Trustees on Oct. 21 voted to delay action on Lone Star governance board and superintendent guardrails to allow additional community engagement and returned the item to a December meeting; trustees also approved an outreach plan that includes a recorded webinar, listening sessions, a survey and up to $1,000 to cover refreshments, printing and other needs.
Trustee Sierra, presenting committee recommendations, said the committee wants to gather more community input on the guardrails (the proposed principles that will guide interaction between the board and superintendent) before seeking final board approval. The proposed outreach timeline included a short recorded webinar ahead of in-person listening sessions, targeted outreach at existing school and community events, a survey and a post-listening-session review by the board.
Trustees debated the scope of board member involvement in outreach, languages for materials and the length and format of the webinar. Some trustees urged a shorter webinar (10–30 minutes) and three town-hall listening sessions; others suggested broader but lighter-touch outreach at existing events. Trustee Ledesma Woody moved to delay the guardrails and add a webinar, survey and funds not to exceed $1,000 for refreshments and printing. Secretary Elvia Guadion seconded; the board approved the amended motion unanimously.
Ending: The board will hold the proposed webinar and listening sessions, collect survey responses, and reconvene to review input before finalizing the guardrails at a later meeting; staff will proceed with outreach logistics and bilingual materials as discussed.
