A member of the public urged Wichita County commissioners on Tuesday to invest in a commercial vehicle weigh station on U.S. 287, saying a modern facility would help stop unsafe trucks and could generate enforcement revenue that offsets taxpayer costs.
"There's a lot of traffic that gets onto 287 between Amarillo and Decatur... If that way station can help stop some of these vehicles going down the road that are unsafe and help protect the drivers, I think we should... invest what needs to be invested," the commenter, Jackie, said in public comment. Jackie said the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) might not use an unimproved facility often and cited a similar facility in Clay County as an example of limited use when the site is not well equipped.
The court chair reminded the public that commissioners cannot take action on items raised during the public‑comment period; the comment was recorded for the court's consideration but no formal vote or directive was made in the meeting minutes.
Separately during opening remarks, Mr. Smythe reported that the county annex office in Iowa Park has reopened and praised staff, naming Jeanette and Rick and their crews for preparing the site and noting plans related to the Burke Burnett project. Smythe said the Iowa Park site will be double‑staffed on Tuesdays and Thursdays for training and customer service.
What they decided: No formal court action was taken on the weigh‑station suggestion during the public‑comment period. Commissioners noted the Iowa Park office reopening as an operational update; related road projects (Reeves Road) and equipment performance were praised by members of the court.
