WELLINGTON, Colo. — Parks staff asked the board Sept. 10 for volunteer help and promotion of upcoming events, including a family-friendly movie night tied to National Talk Like a Pirate Day and several sports tournaments.
Staff said the Talk Like a Pirate Day program will include youth activities and a movie screening of Pirates of the Caribbean made available through a Comcast sponsorship; staff noted the date conflicts with a home football game but said many activities will occur before kickoff. "We hope that many people will attend, dress up as pirates, and enjoy the little things that we have going," Billy Coates said.
Board members and staff discussed staffing needs — several seasonal staff begin reduced hours with the school year — and asked for volunteers to staff booths and programming. Coates said he and one full-time staff member plus seasonal staff will be present, and board members offered to rotate through shifts and promote the event on HOA and social pages.
Separately, staff discussed early planning for a pickleball tournament, possible Halloween/costume play, a grass volleyball tournament at WCP, and winter program registration, which is now open for youth basketball and adult leagues. Parks staff said they are coordinating logistics with community groups and will confirm dates and permit details once organizers finalize plans.
Next steps: Staff will circulate volunteer signups and event schedules; board members agreed to promote events in their networks and help staff when possible.
