The Metropolitan Government committee voted unanimously to accept a U.S. Department of Transportation "Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation" Stage 2 grant to expand multimodal safety data collection along a long corridor from I-40 to the county line. The resolution (RS20251495), sponsored by Toombs, Evan Siegel, Welch and Allen, passed 7-0.
The grant will support advanced data collection to deliver multimodal safety through a system the presenter referred to as LADDM S. Councilmember Allen asked whether the project would collect data only at intersections or also midblock, noting frequent midblock pedestrian crossings near bus stops. Matt Purvis, council liaison for the department, said, "the answer is both." He said most of the mileage will be covered at intersections with roughly 100 meters in each direction, but the corridor segment from Haywood Lane to McCall will have "full coverage, no gaps at all" so the data can support the linked Safe Streets for All project.
The committee exchange focused on scope and coverage rather than funding specifics. No further financial details or implementation timetable for this grant were provided in the committee discussion.
The resolution was moved, seconded and approved without recorded opposition. The committee proceeded to other agenda items after the vote.
