Logansport — At the Sept. 17 meeting of the Logansport Board of Public Works and Safety, parks staff reported progress on several capital projects and outlined upcoming community events at city parks.
Parks director (presenting) said the new playground at Spencer Park will have a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. on Sept. 18 and a community grand-opening event at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with small activities and refreshments. “So that’s done. Yay,” the presenter said of the playground.
Why it matters: The items affect public recreation and programming that draw families and visitors to city parks and impact maintenance schedules and budgets.
Staff briefed the board on capital work: the Dykeman driving range t-station and irrigation work are complete and grass establishment is underway; the golf maintenance barn received a certificate of occupancy after more than a year of work; cart barns were re-skinned with new roofs and exterior walls; and trail-camera installation is roughly 90% complete with remaining cameras at Bishop and Houston parks. The parks presenter said the simulator room needs one projector to be hung and hoped it would be ready by week’s end.
Fall programming includes a Halloween “Howl at the Moon” event Oct. 24 with a trick-or-treat trail and bands, and a Nov. 2 “great pumpkin roll.” Jacqueline (parks staff) is piloting “pop-up” park activities and has partnered with Mary Max Theatre to host a free sing-along showing of Wicked on Nov. 1, with seating limited to 170. The parks presenter said the visitors bureau awarded a grant to help with Christmas in the Park and that donation checks are still being received.
The parks report was approved by vote. Board members praised coordination among parks staff and other departments for recent projects. The presenter noted upgrades to the parks website to make online information more accessible for users.
The board did not take additional action beyond accepting the monthly report; staff will proceed with the scheduled events and remaining installations.
