Anne Hartline, representing the League of Women Voters of Humboldt County, asked the Arcadia City Council on Sept. 17 to endorse and sign a Humboldt County "support for all" letter intended to publicly affirm protections for immigrants and other marginalized residents. The League said boards of supervisors in other California counties have endorsed similar letters and that the Humboldt Human Rights Commission and the county Board of Supervisors previously reviewed and modified a county version. Hartline said the League plans to publish the letter and a list of signees through local media in October and asked Arcadia's elected leaders to join. "Our goal is to publish the support letter and the names of all signees through local media outlets in October," Hartline said. She listed legal and policy protections referenced in the letter including Humboldt County's Measure K (a county sanctuary ordinance), the California Values Act (SB 54), and state laws sometimes referenced as the Truth Act and related statutes, and she said the letter reiterates existing legal protections at state and local levels. Council members thanked Hartline and said the council would consider the request in early October; Hartline noted that individual council members may sign if the full council opts not to endorse the letter. No council vote or formal endorsement was recorded at the Sept. 17 meeting.
