LaSalle County’s safety committee reported four claims for the recent quarter — three related to law-enforcement incidents in the detention setting and one in a nursing home where a staff member tripped over the foot pegs of a wheelchair.
Laura, a county safety staff member, told the board the committee held a quarterly safety incentive drawing and reviewed online training topics including stress management, environmental driving and ergonomics. "This month, we did have 4 claims. There was 3 with the law enforcement for, scuffles in the in the jail setting and 1 at the nursing home where somebody tripped over, the base pegs of... the wheelchairs," Laura said.
The committee is resuming its "Find It Fix It Friday" inspections after a summer pause and is requiring departments to inventory chemicals and submit safety data sheets to human resources for the county database. Staff also inspected eyewash stations and drench hoses at county facilities and said CPR training will be scheduled next month.
Laura said the committee is researching additional training — including verbal judo and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training — after incidents in the nursing home involving combative behavior toward staff.
Ending: The committee’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Oct. 8; staff will continue to track claims and roll out the planned training and safety inspections.
