At the Sept. 22 council briefing, the Public Safety Committee chair said the committee will consider three Community Police Commission (CPC) nominees at its upcoming meeting, including Rick Williams, and will take up legislation to align city code with state law and modify residency requirements for pro tem judges.
Council member Kettle said two CPC nominees are returning members and one nominee, Rick Williams — identified as the brother of John T. Williams — would join the commission. Kettle described Williams’s selection as a milestone and part of ongoing steps related to the city’s consent decree work.
Kettle also said the City Attorney’s Office will present legislation intended to align portions of the Seattle Municipal Code (SMC) with state law (Revised Code of Washington) for “like‑for‑like” updates, and the committee will consider an item to lift the residency requirement so pro tem judges need not live in Seattle. Kettle said a briefing on community safety is also planned for the meeting.
No votes or confirmations occurred during the briefing. The chair said the committee meeting is scheduled for the next day and will include the listed nominees and briefings.
