At the Sept. 25 Comal ISD board meeting a parent, Adriana Benia, used public comment to raise concerns about the district’s parental-consent forms and communications related to Senate Bill 12.
Benia said she encountered conflicting guidance between the district website, individual campus communications, and TEA guidance. She said the first link she received was dated Aug. 25 and used an “all services yes/no” format; she said she later received a message saying that if parents had not returned forms by Sept. 10, “automatic consent was given,” and she was unsure where that date came from. Benia said she had followed chain-of-command communications with campus staff, district counselors and others and that district staff member Daniel Mendez was present at the meeting.
Benia said she expected a district notification to families on Oct. 1 that the form would be updated and asked the board to ensure the district follows through with clear communication so parents can provide informed consent. The board did not take action during the meeting; the remarks were presented as public comment.
