The Committee of the Whole on Nov. 5 voted to authorize the village to apply for a National Fitness Campaign grant to install an outdoor adult fitness circuit at Porter Park.
Staff told the committee the campaign offers a grant of roughly $50,000 that would offset the village's purchase cost; staff presented total cost estimates that varied by model. "It's a $50,000 grant, that would sort of offset the cost we use for that matching," the presenter said. Staff said the village's share, depending on equipment configuration, was presented in materials as roughly $173,000 for one configuration and as much as $236,000 for a larger, double-sided station.
Staff said the grant application deadline for this cycle is in December but that the village could submit now and, if awarded, choose to use the award in the following year's cycle (with a smaller grant amount). Staff also raised storage and logistics questions; the equipment package requires a roughly 15-by-15-foot storage footprint before installation, and staff said they were discussing short-term storage options.
Trustees asked about maintenance. Staff said the equipment includes replaceable components and a 10-year warranty; the presenter described a recommended maintenance routine and replacement-part availability. The presenter also said partnering sponsors such as Blue Cross Blue Shield and others participating with the National Fitness Campaign provide promotional support and materials.
On a motion to authorize the application, the committee voted yes. The roll call recorded affirmative votes from those present and one trustee absent; the motion did not carry specific mover/second names on the record.
Why it matters: the grant would reduce the village's upfront cost for an outdoor fitness amenity intended for Porter Park and could add programming (app-based exercise guidance and partner-supported promotion). Staff will return with final purchase approval and placement details if the grant is awarded.
