The San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission on Oct. 15 voted unanimously to continue deliberation on the continuance calendar item for 717 California Street to its first hearing in December, Dec. 3.
Members of the public urged the commission not to delay further action on the property, where a mural and potential landmark designation are at issue. Speakers said the mural had already been approved by the city in 2021 and urged the commission to forward the matter to the Board of Supervisors for final review and sponsorship instead of another continuance.
Montanes Ratanapakdi, identified as a community sponsor for the project at 717 California Street, told commissioners he had met with the property owner and with the District 3 office and asked that the item not be continued further. Another speaker also said Article 10 (landmark protections) supersedes Article 6 and that the item should proceed to the Board of Supervisors.
After public comment, a motion to continue the item to Dec. 3 was made, seconded and adopted on a roll-call vote. Commissioners Cox, Chen Strang, Barone, Bridal, Vergara, Foley and Commission President Matsuda each recorded aye; the motion passed 7–0.
The public speakers asserted that the mural on the property was approved in 2021 and that procedural confusion had caused the continuance. No additional substantive staff report or new materials were presented at the hearing on Oct. 15; the item was placed on the continuance calendar for December.
The matter will return to the commission on Dec. 3 for further consideration.
