The San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission on Oct. 15 unanimously recommended adding two long-running restaurants to the city’s Legacy Business Registry: Gasparri’s Pizzeria at 5546 Geary Boulevard and the Waterfront Restaurant and Café at Pier 7 on the Embarcadero.
Planning staff presented both applications. Lauren Beal described Gasparri’s as a Richmond District institution founded in 1985, known for its neon sign, hand-painted murals by Roberto Luppetti, and multigenerational customer base; staff recommended adding the restaurant to the registry. Heather Samuels presented the Waterfront Restaurant, founded in 1969 and rebuilt after a 1973 pier fire, citing its maritime ambiance, views, long staff tenure and philanthropic activity as justification for legacy status. Staff recommended resolutions to add both businesses to the registry.
Daniel Ndellicato, the current owner of Gasparri’s, spoke in support and recounted family ownership and the restaurant’s role as a neighborhood gathering place. Members of the public and several commissioners voiced support during discussion, noting the restaurants’ cultural and neighborhood significance.
A motion to approve both legacy business registry applications was made and seconded. On roll-call vote, Commissioners Cox, Chen Strang, Barone, Baldauff, Vergara, Foley and Commission President Matsuda each voted yes and the motion passed 7–0.
The commission’s recommendation will be forwarded per the Legacy Business Registry procedures for final administrative processing.
