The Building Inspection Commission unanimously recommended that the City adopt San Francisco’s set of amendments and technical updates to the 2025 California Building Standards Code, covering building, existing building, residential, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, green building and related housing code updates.

Tate Hanna, Legislative Affairs Manager at DBI, said the department’s Technical Services Division reviewed the triennial state code updates and proposed non‑substantive local amendments to ensure proper cross references, chapter numbering, and to remove redundant sections. Hanna said the Code Advisory Committee reviewed the recommended changes beginning in April and provided unanimous support, and DBI recommended approval without modification.

Hanna noted that while the housing code updates are part of the overall package, the housing code is not required by state law to be replaced and the department made targeted updates where cross‑references were outdated. The package must be adopted by the city to maintain consistent code references ahead of the state code effective date.

The commission moved to recommend approval; the motion passed on a unanimous roll call vote.
