Vanessa Sans Kattebek, a teacher at Phoebe Hearst Elementary and second vice president of the Sacramento City Teachers Association, spoke during public comment to mark Hispanic Heritage Month and to call attention to the Poderosas mural project honoring nine Chicana and Latina leaders.
"I'd like to wish you a happy Hispanic Heritage Month," Sans Kattebek said, and added, "I'd like to teach you about the 9 Chicana Latina Poderosas or powerful women who are celebrated on the Poderosas mural project," which recognizes people who have engaged in social justice and advocacy in the Sacramento Valley region.
Sans Kattebek described one of the mural subjects, Rhonda Rios Kravitz, saying Kravitz returned to Sacramento in 1987 to become an ethnic services consultant for the California State Library. Sans Kattebek said Kravitz was recruited to Sacramento State in 1990 as a Target of Opportunity library faculty member, later served as dean of the Learning Resource Center at Sacramento City College from 2007 to 2014, and retired to focus on equity, diversity and immigration issues.
Sans Kattebek directed listeners to the project's website, sacpoderosas.org, for information on the mural subjects and viewing locations. She closed her remarks by saying community members can "always ask a teacher" to learn more.
The statement took place during the meeting's public comment portion; no board action or motion was reported in conjunction with the remarks.
