The Moab City Council on Oct. 14 approved a contract for asbestos abatement and structure demolition at 737 Mountain View Drive and heard an update from the city manager about ongoing Walnut Lane cleanup efforts.
Councilmember Jason moved and the council unanimously approved awarding a $79,855 contract to A1 Abatement for complete abatement and disposal of asbestos-containing materials and demolition services at the Mountain View property. The council conducted a roll-call vote and recorded approval; staff said a preconstruction meeting will set the demolition schedule.
At the same meeting, City Manager Michael told councilors he had inspected Walnut Lane and described debris, trailers and remaining piles that must be removed. He said some trailers contain asbestos, which complicates removal, and that staff had reached limitations on in-house cleanup time. Michael said the city has budgeted $150,000 to finish the Walnut Lane cleanup and directed staff to prioritize final cleanup steps.
Why it matters: The Mountain View demolition removes a blighted, hazardous structure and the asbestos abatement aims to protect neighbors. Walnut Lane has been the subject of public comment and local concern for years; the manager’s update acknowledged a visible, ongoing mess and committed city resources to finish cleanup.
Next steps: The abatement contractor will hold a preconstruction meeting and implement asbestos controls under state oversight; the city manager asked staff to provide regular updates to the council on Walnut Lane cleanup progress.
Ending: City staff and council members asked that neighbors be notified about demolition timing and that the city ensure appropriate health and safety controls during abatement.
