Planning commission sends Piggly Wiggly redevelopment to council after unanimous approval
The Homewood Planning Commission voted 7–0 to forward an amended development plan for redevelopment of the Piggly Wiggly at 3000 Independence Drive to city council.

Robert Thompson, the project's architect with Thompson Architecture, and Josh Donnell of Shoal Engineering described a proposal to expand the existing store by about 7,500 square feet, renovate the building, add new frontage toward Highway 31 and Oxmoor Road, and reconfigure parking to respond to an Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) plan to close an existing entrance off Highway 31.

Donnell said the plan keeps the existing loading-dock routing unchanged and adds approximately 114 proposed new parking spaces in the southwest corner of the site, for an estimated total of roughly 153 parking stalls across the property. "We are adding an additional parking area ... we have about 114 parking spots proposed for this as new parking spots I believe we're looking at around 153 total for the site," Donnell said. The design includes stormwater inlets and a stormwater management area in the southwest corner to capture run-off from the new impervious area.

Commissioners and nearby residents who spoke during the meeting praised the project for addressing truck routing and neighbor concerns. One commissioner said the proposal was "the very best version of the plan" that had been brought forward and commended the improved green space and neighbor accommodations.

The commission voted to forward the amended development plan (AD25-10-07) to city council with a unanimous recommendation. The plan will be subject to city council review and any necessary permits and easements related to ALDOT's roadway changes and local stormwater requirements.
