City of McAllen engineering staff reported that sections A and C of an alley rehabilitation project are under construction and on track to finish by October 2025, with design for section B complete and construction expected in 2025. The two currently active sections carry a combined $1.7 million investment; section B is estimated at $1.5 million.
Eduardo Mendoza, director of engineering for the City of McAllen, said the city’s alley rehabilitation project is upgrading aging unimproved alleys across the community. "The city's alley rehabilitation project aims to upgrade aging unimproved alleys across the community," Mendoza said.
Mendoza told the meeting that construction is underway on sections A and C. Section A covers areas south of Business 83; section C stretches between Business 83 and Trenton Road. Both sections are on track to complete by October 2025 with a combined investment of $1,700,000. Design work for section B is already complete, and construction is expected to begin in 2025 at an estimated cost of $1,500,000.
City staff said section B will improve alleys between Business 83 and Pecan Boulevard and will include portions of the Las Palmas Historic District and neighborhoods west of Bicentennial. Mendoza described a scoring system used to select alleys for improvement that considers surface condition, pavement type, garbage-route access and connectivity to prioritize locations "where they are needed the most."
The presentation included a contact number and website for more information: the engineering department at (956) 681-1151 and mcallen.net.
The remarks were delivered as a project update and did not include a formal vote or action recorded in the transcript.
