Trustees approved revisions to Policy 4260 to add the same four protected classes added to the district nondiscrimination policy. Staff said the changes align local facility rental practices with state law; federal protections for nationally organized youth groups under Title 36 remain in effect.
The Board approved revisions to Policy 4260 (use of school facilities) on Oct. 13 by a 4–0 vote. The revision adds ethnicity, homelessness, immigration or citizenship status, and neurodivergence to the list of protected categories for facility rentals and use.
Sherry (district staff member) presented the change and told the board the updates are driven by House Bill 1296 and the corresponding RCW language; the changes are principally editorial and intended to align district policy with state law. Staff confirmed the district will continue to provide equal access to nationally organized youth groups consistent with federal Title 36 protections.
Motion to approve the revision passed 4–0. Staff will update public-facing materials and facility rental procedures to reflect the new protected-class language.
