Board approves $86,500 addendum to repair West Third handrail

The Bloomington City Board of Public Works on July 29 approved addendum No. 1 to a service agreement with Specialties Company LLC to repair a damaged handrail on West Third Street and to replace a larger section determined necessary for pedestrian safety.

Miranda Beaver of Public Works Administration, presenting for Joe Vandevender of the Street Division, said the repair request expanded after an in-depth inspection showed more replacement was needed to make the area safe. She said the addendum is "an additional $86,500 not to exceed amount to cover that more immediate safety need," and that the work will include replacing rail sections on both sides of the north-side sidewalk. Beaver said the south-side sidewalk currently meets safety regulations and may be considered for replacement in a future year if further inspection indicates the need.

Beaver told the board there are no expedited fees and that the city would assist with traffic control to help reduce costs. She said materials should arrive within three weeks after the contract is signed and the contractor expects about one week of work in the field.

Board members asked whether previously ordered pieces were in hand; Beaver said distributors had received prior orders but the city had not taken delivery because the scope expanded. The motion to approve the addendum passed on a unanimous roll call by members present. No public comment was recorded on the item.
