Cheyenne Weber, principal at Kamiak, presented a schoolwide update to Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) expectations, telling the Pullman board the PBIS team proposed new language to better reflect academic and developmental goals. The new wording is Self-control, On-task, Achieve and Respect, replacing the previous phrasing of Safety, Open-mindedness, Awareness and Respect.

Cheyenne said staff completed a survey and “overwhelmingly” approved the change. She explained the rationale for each new term: self-control focuses on thinking before acting; on-task emphasizes active focus and participation; achieve centers on meeting individual goals rather than a single graded standard; and respect covers treating people and property with care.

Board members praised school leaders for the effort. One board director said principals and staff “are really putting a lot of effort into getting those expectations for the students and really holding them to those expectations,” and that the work appears to be making a difference across schools. Cheyenne said the changes will be taught and reinforced across elementary settings and that prior concepts like open-mindedness will still be addressed within the new framework.
