Sunbury — City officials warned Oct. 1 that three oversized AEP transformers will be delivered to the substation later this month and will require temporary road closures and traffic controls in the downtown square.

City Administrator Hennessy said there will be one transformer delivery each Sunday across three weeks and that the moves will require blocking Cherry Street on both sides at the Square between Vernon Street and Columbus Avenue during the moves. Deliveries are expected between about 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., and crews will place metal plates along the Lady Liberty curve to protect turf and pavement where needed.

Hennessy said the contractor will photograph the affected areas before and after deliveries so the city can identify any damage and seek contractor remediation if needed. The pedestrian crossing “button” in the corner will be removed temporarily and a temporary pedestrian control will be in place for about three weeks, he said.

Officials asked staff to notify residents of possible signal work and slow-moving oversized vehicles during the deliveries.

What happens next: City staff will coordinate with AEP and the contractor, issue resident notices and monitor the delivery operations, documenting any damage for repair claims.
