Mayor Derek Norton celebrated the completion of the long-running Windy Hill Road project and said the city has secured $28 million toward the South Cobb Drive corridor refresh, with more funding and federal/state approvals still needed.
Mayor Derek Norton announced the completion of the Windy Hill Road reconstruction and reported the city has secured $28 million toward a planned South Cobb Drive corridor refresh.
Norton described Windy Hill as a longtime construction burden now finished and said the completed corridor was named the state’s top road construction project. “Traffic now moves straight through that corridor from South Cobb Drive to Atlanta Road with local access roads on either side to support our local businesses,” he said.
On the South Cobb Drive project, Norton said the city has secured $28 million in funding but still needs additional dollars to fully fund the refresh, which is based on a 2017 corridor study. The concept includes travel lanes and local access lanes, landscape medians, additional signals, pocket parks, and bicycle and pedestrian trails. Norton said citizen input for the project is expected to begin late next year and that design and construction scheduling will depend on state and federal transportation funding and approvals.
Norton noted the project has attracted federal attention and credited Congresswoman Lucy McBath and past efforts by Congressmen David Scott and Barry Loudermilk for assisting funding efforts. He cautioned that projects involving state and federal dollars are subject to timelines outside local control.
Ending: City officials said they will begin public outreach next year and continue seeking funding; final design and construction dates remain contingent on external approvals.
