The School City of Mishawaka's recent board meeting highlighted exciting summer learning opportunities aimed at enhancing educational experiences for students of all ages. The curriculum and instruction department presented a comprehensive overview of programs designed to support elementary, middle, and high school students during the summer months.
For the youngest learners, the district will continue its "Kindergarten Kick Start" program, which helps incoming kindergarten students acclimate to school routines and build relationships with peers. This two-week initiative is designed to ensure a smooth transition into their educational journey.
Elementary and middle school students will benefit from summer learning labs in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club. These labs will provide academic instruction in the mornings, followed by engaging activities such as STEM projects and field trips in the afternoons. With current sites at John Young and LaSalle Elementary already at capacity, the district is exploring options to expand these offerings.
At the secondary level, the district is introducing "Jaguar Jumpstart" for sixth graders transitioning to seventh grade, allowing them to familiarize themselves with their new environment. Mishawaka High School will also offer programs focused on credit recovery and enrichment in subjects like band and orchestra, ensuring students have the support they need to succeed.
Additionally, specialized camps will be available, including a robotics camp for students in grades 3 through 8, where participants will have the chance to build and compete with robots. A camp for individuals with disabilities will also be hosted, featuring educational components and fun activities.
In another significant development, the board discussed the launch of a Multilingual Mentor Program at Mishawaka High School. This initiative aims to support students learning English through peer mentorship, fostering a sense of community and belonging among multilingual learners. The program encourages students to connect based on shared cultural backgrounds and interests, providing academic support and leadership opportunities.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to continuously improve these programs based on feedback from families, students, and teachers, ensuring that the district meets the evolving needs of its community. As these initiatives unfold, they promise to enrich the educational landscape for Mishawaka students, preparing them for future success.
